Project Overview

THE BRIEF

GearUp is a mobile e-commerce app concept developed as part of the Google UX Design Certificate in 2024. The project explores how gamers and casual shoppers can find, compare and purchase gaming equipment without getting overwhelmed by technical specifications and endless product options.

The design focuses on making product discovery easier, presenting useful information clearly and creating a straightforward shopping experience from browsing to checkout.

Choosing gaming equipment can be surprisingly complicated, especially for shoppers who aren't familiar with different brands, technical specifications or product compatibility.

The challenge was to design a shopping experience that helps users make confident purchasing decisions, find products within their budget and move through the buying process with less friction.

The project covered the full UX design process, from user research and journey mapping to wireframes, prototyping, usability testing and final interface design.

Process

The project began with surveys and user interviews to understand how people shop for gaming equipment and what makes the process difficult. While price and product variety were expected to be the main concerns, research also highlighted the importance of trustworthy product information, clear navigation and reliable customer support.

These findings informed the user journey, initial sketches and digital wireframes. A low-fidelity prototype was then tested with users, revealing several navigation issues that helped shape the next design iterations.

Ideation & Structure

The initial work focused on mapping the shopping journey, from discovering a product to reviewing its details and completing a purchase.

Paper sketches helped explore different layouts before moving into digital wireframes. The structure brought together product categories, promotional offers, filtering options, product details and a shopping cart.

Usability testing revealed that the menu's two-column layout was confusing for some participants and that the View All option wasn't prominent enough. These findings informed refinements to the navigation and helped make the browsing experience more straightforward.

Visual Identity

GearUp's visual identity combines a clean, minimal interface with bold accents inspired by gaming culture.

A bright lime green highlights promotions and key interactions, while charcoal, white and light grey provide a neutral background for product imagery. A vivid red-orange adds contrast to the logo and selected graphic elements.

The Graphie typeface brings a modern, approachable feel to the interface, with clear differences in size and weight to help users scan product information and navigate the app.

Design Solution

The final mobile interface brings product discovery, comparison and shopping into a consistent experience. Clear category navigation, product-focused layouts and accessible controls help users find what they need without unnecessary steps.

  • A homepage featuring new arrivals, special offers and product categories gives shoppers several ways to explore the catalogue.

  • Product listings use a simple grid layout, supported by filters for connectivity, sensor type, price and colour to help narrow down the options.

  • Individual product pages bring together images, specifications, compatibility information, customer reviews and purchasing actions in one place.
