Project Overview
THE BRIEF
Edward Weston is a self-initiated website concept exploring how digital interaction and composition can frame the work of one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century.
Created as an exercise in UI motion and unconventional web composition, the project reimagines a photography archive as a continuous visual experience rather than a traditional multi-page website. The interface uses a restrained visual system and horizontal movement to keep Weston’s photographs, biography and artistic legacy at the centre of the experience.
The goal was to explore a less conventional approach to a portfolio and archive website, using motion and spatial composition as part of the storytelling.
The experience needed to present Weston’s photography alongside his biography without competing with the work itself. The challenge was to create an interface that feels distinctive and interactive while remaining deliberately minimal, allowing imagery, typography and movement to shape the experience.
Process
Ideation & Structure
The website is structured as one continuous horizontal canvas divided into three sections: Home, Works and Biography. Instead of traditional page navigation, scrolling moves the entire experience from right to left, creating a gallery-like journey through the content.
The menu works as a set of anchor points within this canvas, allowing visitors to move directly between sections while preserving the feeling of a single uninterrupted space. Works presents the photography as a changing composition of differently scaled images, while Biography transforms Weston’s life into a seven-part visual timeline that gradually leads to the closing quote.
Visual Identity
Design Solution
The final design uses an intentionally restrained visual language to give Weston’s photography maximum presence. A near-monochrome palette of #E9E9E9 and #101010, with subtle #808080 details, creates a neutral backdrop while typography and scale establish hierarchy throughout the experience.
Layouts shift continuously across the horizontal canvas: photographs change in scale and position, large dates structure the biographical timeline, and generous negative space creates rhythm between denser compositions. Selected works can be opened in an expanded view with contextual information without leaving the gallery.
Motion becomes part of the visual system rather than decoration. Horizontal scrolling, navigation transitions and subtle UI animations connect the individual compositions and reinforce the feeling of moving through one continuous photographic exhibition.
